Subsidy probe: Committee denies bribery allegations

THE House of Representatives committee that probed fuel subsidy has denied reports that its took bribe from oil marketers, declaring that 'those indicted by our reports are already fighting back.'Addressing journalists in Abuja, on Sunday, the chairman of the committee, Honourable Farouk Lawan, described the reports as unfounded and an attempt to detract the government from prosecuting those indicted by its reports.'The general public is hereby reminded that during and after the investigations, we have severally raised alarm on pressure on us from different quarters. 'In particular, on April 28, we alerted the public that a marketer promised to fly in a jet loaded with US dollars, which he intended to share to both the House leadership and members of the ad hoc committee,' Honourable Lawan said.According to him, 'the present mudslinging is not unexpected, in view of the calibre of people whose activities were found wanting in the report, adding that 'the committee is aware that in desperation to discredit the report and divert attention of the public, a video footage displaying caricature of my person is now in circulation.'Lawan affirmed that the sanctity of the committee report remained unassailable, noting that 'it will be in the interest of the country for relevant authorities to faithfully implement the resolutions of the House.'No amount of cheap blackmail will affect our resolve to continue to act in the best interest of the country with all the available information at our disposal,' Lawan said.
