Dana crash: Church 'll take responsibility of dead members' children 'Bishop

Published by Tribune on Mon, 11 Jun 2012

The presiding Bishop of The Reedemed Evangelical Mission(TREM), Lagos, Dr Mike Okonkwo, has disclosed that henceforth, the church will begin to care for the three children left behind by Reverend Ayodeji Cole, who was the Abuja zonal pastor of the church and his wife, Ngozi Cole, who were both killed in the Dana air crash.'We have put plans in place to ensure that none of the children suffer. It is our responsibility and we are not going to run away from it,' he said.Dr Okonkwo, who spoke to journalists in Lagos at the weekend, expressed deep sadness over the loss of the couple whom he described as dedicated children of God.He further said,'they are people I raised from the cradle who were doing mighty works in Abuja. We normally travel together to some West African countries to minister the word of God. We were supposed to travel together to Brazaville, Congo and he was on his way to our Lagos headquarters when the incident occurred. Nevertheless, I have always believed that nothing happens without God's knowledge. He has power to prevent what happened but He chose not to,' the cleric stated. He, however, called on the Federal Government to take a critical look at the country's aviation industry and take proactive steps to prevent future disasters.'It is only when a tragedy like this occurs that they will begin to conduct probe and begin to fire people. What were they doing before now. 'That tells you how irresponsible people are when it comes to human lives. In Nigeria, we do not have value for human lives. I just hope the Federal Government will rise up and do what is right to prevent future occurrences,' Bishop Okonkwo added.
