Environmentalist urges Nigerians to embrace Green Initiatives

Published by Tribune on Mon, 11 Jun 2012

A Lagos-based environmental activist, Mr Taiwo Adewole, has advised the state governments to embrace the `Green Initiative' to protect the environment.Speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos in commemoration of the 2012 World Environment Day (WED), Adewole said that Nigeria was still running a 'brown economy' rather than a more sustainable 'green economy.'``We are presently running a brown economy and not a green economy because we still solely run our vehicles on fossil fuel; every single household and organisation in Nigeria runs on generator on daily basis, releasing toxins into the air.'' He urged the public to plant more trees to help in absorbing the excess carbon dioxide (CO2) released daily into the atmosphere.Commenting on the recent Dana Air crash, the environmental activist said that there would be a lot of environmental and health disasters around the scene of the accident arising from toxic emission from the burnt aircraft.According to him, the emission from the burnt aircraft constitute health hazard to residents of the immediate community of the crash site.Adewole called for the provision of a special dumpsite for the wastes collected from the crash site.``When all the wreckage and waste are evacuated, are there specialised dumpsites for such waste' These are some of the questions we need to ask and find solutions to,'' Adewole said.NAN reported that the World Environment Day is celebrated every June 5 to create a positive environmental action for a cleaner, greener and brighter outlook for the planet and future generations.
