Reps to host Mikel Obi next week

Published by Guardian on Tue, 12 Jun 2012

THE House of Representatives Sports Committee will host Nigerian international and Chelsea's midfielder John Obi Mikel on June 19 in honour of his double victory with his London club at both the English FA Cup and EUFA Champions League, which Chelsea won this season.Disclosing this over the weekend in Abuja, Chairman of the House Committee on Sports, Godfrey Ali Gaiya, said the decision was based on the National Assembly's determination to reward excellence, stressing that Mikel deserved more than the honour for making Nigeria proud. The member representing Zangon Kataf Federal Constituency in the House added that the National Assembly wanted to use the occasion to encourage other Nigerian footballers and sportsmen at home and abroad and show them the interest Nigerians attach on their achievements.'We have tentatively set aside Tuesday, June 19, as the day to receive Mikel Obi, an honour for a worthy Nigerian soccer ambassador and an indispensable and integral member of the Chelsea squad that won both the English FA Cup and the UEFA Champions League.'The House wishes to use the honour to Mikel as a way of encouraging our footballers and sportsmen, both at home and abroad, that the government and people of Nigeria are proud of their achievements and exploits and will continue to support them in their efforts to make the country proud.'Mikel did Nigeria proud, he is our worthy ambassador for proving his competence in the Chelsea squad that lifted both the FA Cup and UEFA Champions League. His presence and rating among the best 22 players in the world league was enough indication that something good can always come out of Nigeria.
