OUR society recognises the existence of evil creatures that lure men to commit acts of wickedness. We feel the negative vibration of evil all around us. As a result, good friends suddenly become enemies. Spouses that pledged to love one another end up at divorce courts. Many times, matters that seem like minor squabbles, degenerate into bloodshed. Our world is laden with evil. The forces of wickedness are on the prowl, looking for whom to devour. We see this everyday in Lagos, Abuja, Maiduguri, Kaduna, Bauchi, Yobe, etc. It stares us right in the face. There are enemies of progress who see nothing good in others. These don't like to see others prosper and so go to any length to block their way. They abound in homes, streets, churches, town hall meetings, communities, etc.Have you ever wondered why men exhibit so much wickedness in their daily activities' What would make a wife poison her husband' Why would some people take it upon themselves to place bombs and other explosives at public places, including churches and mosques, in order to snuff out the life of the innocent' Why would men take up arms and terminate the life of others after disposing them of their possessions'Jesus clearly makes it known that evil ones possess the hearts of men and cause them to perpetrate evil. Their leader is the devil, and his mission is to steal, kill and destroy. The Bible gives credence to this fact in several chapters and verses, starting from Genesis, when it recalled the creation of man and the part played by the devil who wanted to place himself in the position of God. That same devil who was banished from heaven to the earth is very much around with us. Whenever there is evil, you can be sure that the devil and his agents are at work.Wickedness is an evil fruit that poisons the mind and heart of men. It takes the genuine love of the spirit of God to surmount it. Most of the iniquities we see around us are borne out of sheer wickedness. While it is true that man, as a fallen being, is under the snare of the evil one, we are also very much alive to the fact that we must not make ourselves willing vessels of the devil. Is your heart full of evil thoughts' Are you battling with the urge to consciously commit wicked acts' Then, you must run to God for help. Demons can only thrive in your soul if you create the right atmosphere for them. This is why we must learn to study the word of God always and allow it bear fruit in our lives. We are not helpless. As Christians, Christ is our armour and shield. When you call upon him, he will come in and abide with you.The wicked will not go unpunished. The book of Job readily amplifies this when it said: 'No wicked people have been happy for long. They may grow great, towering into the sky, so great that their heads reach the clouds, but they will be blown away like dust.' (Job 5:7)The wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God. Are you involved in acts of wickedness' This is a call for you to have a rethink. Evil does not pay. Sooner than later, the law of karma will catch up with you. Have you seen a woman who poisoned the food of another woman's child, only for her own child to eat the same food and die' Have you observed that most wicked people end up in tragic circumstances' Remember Charles Taylor and Hosni Mubarak of Egypt, both of who were recently convicted for war crimes and corruption. What more explanation do we need''What evil people swallow is like poison; it kills them like the bite of a deadly snake.' Job 20:16We should always cry to God to give us the spirit of love and unity so that we can accommodate one another and desist from wicked acts. Evil only leads to damnation of the soul.May God help us. Amen.Very Rev. Msgr. Gabriel Osu is the Director, Social Communications, Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos.
