Salami: Lawyer denies filing suit against NJC

Published by Tribune on Wed, 20 Jun 2012

There was a mild drama on Tuesday at the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja as a supposed plaintiff and legal practitioner, Wilfred Okoli, in a suit seeking to restrain President Goodluck Jonathan from reinstating the suspended President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Isa Ayo Salami, told Justice Abdul Kafarati that he was not aware of the suit filed in his name.Immediately the court mentioned the case and called the parties in the matter to enter appearance, Okoli got up and said he was not aware of this suit filed in his name stating that, 'My lord, I am not aware of this suit. My consent was never sought before it was brought before you. I have no knowledge of it, my lord.'An Abuja-based lawyer, Amobi Nzelu, had earlier filed the suit on behalf of Okoli, who is a counsel in his law firm asking the court to stop President Jonathan from acting on the recommendation sent to him by the National Judicial Council (NJC).The plaintiff had named NJC, Salami, the Attorney-General of the Federation and President Goodluck Jonathan as first to fourth defendants respectively. It will be recalled that the NJC had, on May 10, 2012, recommended the reinstatement of Salami. The presiding judge, Justice Abdul Kafarati, however, asked Amobi and Okoli to go and put their house in order while he adjourned till September 22.He also ordered Amobi to ensure service on the second defendant(Salami) and give report of service to the court on the next adjourned date.
