I have no regrets playing for Nigeria 'Aluko 'Emenike may get conditional recall to Eagles

Published by Tribune on Fri, 22 Jun 2012

DESPITE his inability to make the start list of Nigeria's Super Eagles, Glasgow Rangers of Sotland striker Sone Aluko said he was pleased to have opted to play for Nigeria saying he would wait for his time to make the team.Twenty-three year old Aluko was born in Birmingham to Nigerian parents and played for England at under-19 level before he later switched nationality to make his debut for the Super Eagles in a friendly against Republic of Ireland in 2009 and has since played for the Nigeria U-20 and U-23s."When I made the decision, I didn't think I would just walk into the Nigerian side. I chose Nigeria because my heart said I want to play for Nigeria and I know why I made the decision and it's still valid, added Aluko.Although he did not feature in the 2014 World Cup qualifiers against Namibia and Malawi and only came on as a late substitute in the 2-0 home win against Rwanda in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers last Saturday, the forward is prepared to wait for his opportunity."Naturally, I'm disappointed like every other player, but there is time for everything. I believe my time will come. I just need to keep working hard, playing well for my club and opportunities will come. When they come, I'll take it."On his future with the Scottish giants, Aluko said: "As we speak, I don't know what the next step is. In the next few weeks, it will be clearer [but] I'm still a Glasgow Rangers player and, until that changes, I'm happy.'Meanwhile,RUSSIA-BASED striker Emmanuel Emenike will be recalled by Nigeria on the condition he agrees to behave better, officials said. The Spartak Moscow striker was overlooked by coach Stephen Keshi for this month's three qualifiers because of 'poor attitude', but officials disclosed, the Eagles coach has now agreed to pick the big striker as he seeks solutions to his low-scoring team.'Emenike is being seriously considered to return to the Eagles because he has shown at least in Europe that he knows how to score goals,' a top team official informed MTNFootball.com.'But that can only be on the condition that the player conducts himself better in the national team.'His attitude must change drastically and he should be willing to humble himself and not always feel too big.'The former FC Cape Town star has made his mark in Russia after a sensational switch from Fenerbahce in Turkey, where he was also a hero for Karabukspor. He ended his first season in Russia as the most prolific African player. The 24-year-old centre forward has scored once in five appearances for Nigeria since he made his long-awaited debut in February 2011 against Sierra Leone in Lagos. He last featured for the Eagles in a 2-0 win over Zambia in a friendly played in Kaduna in November.Nigeria's next full international game would most likely be a friendly on August 15 during the FIFA free window. They will then play the final round of the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers between October and November.
