Players awaiting Keshi's call-up

Published by Tribune on Mon, 25 Jun 2012

UNDER Stephen Keshi, the Super Eagles are regenerating. Keshi and his crew are in a stage of experimenting new formation, injecting fresh blood, recalling on-form players and at the same time pursuing two targets, the 2013 Nations Cup and 2014 World Cup tickets. The busy schedule of June has been met with two wins and a draw but Keshi knows it could be better. There are players who can lay legitimate claim for a slot in the Eagles going by the form they showed in their clubs in recent month. Tribunesports DIPO OGUNSOLA lists some of the players who may be invited or recalled to the Super EaglesMichael Eneramo (Sivasspor/Turkey)The heavily-built striker netted 14 goals last season - 11 in the regular season and three in playoffs for Europa League qualification. He is now being linked with a move to top Turkish club Trabzonspor as he also hopes to be recalled by the Nigeria Super Eagles.Peter Odemwingie (West Bromwich Albion/England)The West Bromwich Albion striker scored 10 goals this season despite his problems with injuries. Last season, he blasted 15 goals in the league for 'The Baggies'. He was excluded from the June engagements probably because the coaching crew wanted him to concentrate on his wedding ceremoniesOfoedu Chikeluba, RangersCoaches fear to expose youngsters to the spotlight of international football but the teenager has continued to show strong heart and adventure in the Nigeria Premier League. In an era which the home-based talent are being considered, Chikeluba could be encouraged to learn from his senior colleagues in the national team while Keshi watches his development at club level.Joseph Akpala (Club Brugge/BelgiuThe best foreign player in Belgium was an ever-present player for his clubside Club Brugge. Akpala, who was the hotshot in Belgium three seasons ago, fired 14 goals during the regular season to emerge his team top scorer, before he added four more goals in the playoffs. Akpala also scored four in the UEFA Europa League. He has now been linked with a move away from Club Brugge.Yakubu Aiyegbeni (Blackburn Rovers/England)He was the highest scoring Nigerian player in the EPL this past season with 17 goals despite his club Blackburn Rovers crashing out to the English Championship. He fired blanks in the goalless draw between Nigeria and Rwanda in Kigali, enough excuse for Keshi to try out new-blood. However, he may get his second chance as the Eagles' strikers showed in the qualifiers that they do not quite know how to utilise chances.Emmanuel Emenike (Spartak Moscow/Russia)The bull-like Nigeria striker has made his mark in Russia after a surprise switch from Fenerbahce in Turkey, where he was also a hero for Karabukspor. He was the highest-scoring African in Russia in the just concluded season with 13 goals. He has been told to keep his head low if he desires a recall to the EaglesObinna Obiefule (Mosta FC/Malta)The big Mosta FC striker was the highest scoring Nigerian in Europe this season with a new goal-scoring record of 34 goals in Malta. He has been the most celebrated player in Malta and has received offers from Germany Denmark and France. He might not have been in Keshi's good books probably because he plays in the lower league of European football.Mikel Obi (Chelsea/England)Mikel Obi was without a doubt best Nigeria player in the recently concluded season in Europe having fully asserted himself at Chelsea. Mikel went all the way to win the 2011/2012 UEFA Champions League, he also won his fourth FA Cup trophy same season. He was selective of national calls but now that he has seen that Nigeria does not lament his absence, he has a point to prove if or when he is recalled.Mutiu Adegoke, Shooting StarsHe is described as the best left-back in the Nigeria Premier League. He has been part of Nigeria's Home-based Eagles since 2007 and has gained experience playing continental football for Enyimba of Aba, Asec Mimossa of Abidjan and Dolphins of Port Harcourt. This season, he has scored match winning goals for his club from dead ball situations, aspects where Keshi could find him handy.
