Ika South leaders petition Delta gov over bad roads

Published by Tribune on Thu, 28 Jun 2012

Worried over the deplorable nature of roads across Ika South Local Government Area, Delta State, elders in the area have sent a Save-Our-Soul (SOS) message to the state governor, Dr Emmanuel Uduaghan. In a statement presented to the state Commissioner for Works, Mr. Funkekeme Solomon who was in the area to have a first-hand assessment of the roads, the elders expressed confidence in the administration of Dr. Uduaghan to address the challenge. The visibly shaken commissioner, expressed shock at the level of dilapidation of roads in the area, saying that 'what I have seen is that the roads are not a very good state, they require attention.'Mr Funkekeme, after assessing some of the roads including Abude, Imudia, Egun, Ode, Dein, Cementary and Charles streets in Agbor town, said the visit was a pre-budget visit, and assured of government intervention in not too distant future, noting that the area was very strategic to the economic and political development of the state. But the elders in their statement, attributed the neglect of the area to alleged diversion of development projects meant for the area to its neighbouring Ika North East Local Government Area by a top politician from Ika North East. The statement was signed by elders and leaders of Ika South, including a former presidential aide, Dr. Cairo Ojougboh, Retired Rear Admiral Peter Eluma, Mr Fide Okoh, S.W. Anumele, John Okoh, Kingsley Noye Phillips, Ulebor Isaac, Andrew Ashien, Benson Melekwe and J.A. Ojobu and others.According to the statement, the disparity in terms of development between Ika South and Ika North East is 'the handiwork of the commissioner who represented the constituency at the beginning of the political dispensation in 1999. At that time, the federal constituency had just one commissioner who later transformed to the Secretary to Delta State Government (SSG) and he is now a serving member of the National Assembly at Abuja.
