IMAGE AND ETIQUETTE With Pamela

Published by Guardian on Sat, 30 Jun 2012

Cultivating PoiseFREEDOM from fault and default is not something common to man because in all perfection there is a limit (Psalm 119). Yet there are personalities that inspire us for their strength and perseverance, their singular confidence and ethereal calm. I am confident that most people can name at least a few of such personalities in around them. They carry a calm and unruffled assurance and aura; a fearless self-control especially in the face of confrontation. What qualities and attributes make certain individuals larger than life' We see the manifestations of certain qualities in their image and deportment however; it is always a product of a mature intellect and wisdom gained from experience and instruction.Outlined below are some qualities and attributes of dynamic personalities. I encourage you to outline your own attributes and shortcomings on a sheet of paper with the intention of adding to and removing from your list as required.Taking Control/ResponsibilityIf you keep looking for people or situations to blame, you will never rise above your limitations. When negative or positive things happen, we ought to take some time out to find out what worked and what did not. It is not enough reason that situations or people were contrary; indeed there is nothing new to man. Therefore, we are left without excuse if we remain stagnant. If you desire a greater quality of living and satisfaction, you must take responsibility for your life onwards.Striving for perfection by holding on to your visionYou have got to hold on to a vision larger than yourself for we all soon discover that perfection is a moving target! If you live for what you can easily accomplish, you will never discover the deep waters that dwell within you. You will never know your true capacity, never discover that possibilities are unending and therefore will never reach full maturity. Mediocrity is an archenemy of true vision; be true to yourself.Letting go of mistakes and comfortsSometimes, the only thing left to do is humble ourselves into admitting that we have made a mistake. To err is very much human and we should accept that ' not only in others but in ourselves first. If we admit our failings to ourselves, we wouldn't waste so much time and effort on rising up when we fall. Humility is before honour likewise pride before a downfall. On the other hand, letting go sometimes requires that we let go of certain comforts and familiarities that often draw us back from the greater possibilities in front of us. It is naturally painful when something is ripped away from you, however, to be able to soar you must let go of all extra baggage.RestYou cannot control everything. Sometimes there is a great deal you cannot control. Unfortunately, sometimes situations around us seem to demand our attention and action; it seems we're doomed standing still so we think it better to do something ' anything or at least look busy. Many times, it is at this point that many people miss their way by being too hasty in making a decision or giving in to despair and seeking a shortcut. This is the junction where the strength of one's virtue is tested. If only one could wait it out and stay consistent, the clouds would soon disappear and one will have enough clarity to hit the bull right in the eye.Staying StrongWhen you face trouble, do not flinch or flee, look it in the face regardless of your misgivings and dare to make yourself free. It's all about perception; see so-called negative situations as opportunities to grow and develop. When you do, tribulations will make you rather than break you. Tribulations produce perseverance and perseverance, character and character, hope. Hope never disappoints! (see Romans 5).I'll close with this quote from Carl Schurz: 'Ideal are like stars; you will not succeed in touching them with your hands. But like the seafaring man on the desert of waters, you choose them as your guides, and following them you will reach your destiny.'Image and Etiquette addresses general perceptions, societal norms and expectations and personal expressions with the goal to cultivate social graces, suavity and a dignified presence for interpersonal relationships.
