London 2012 Jonathan warns Team Nigeria against doping

Published by Tribune on Fri, 06 Jul 2012

TEAM Nigeria to the London 2012 Olympics made up of 41 athletes, was yesterday formally handed over to the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) at the Sheraton Hotels, Lagos. The rest members of the team will leave Lagos anytime from now for the United Kingdom, as other athletes from their various camping sites abroad, to move to the Surrey camp of Team Nigeria ahead of the Games scheduled to begin on July 27.Speaking at a colourful ceremony attended by some members of Team Nigeria, Minister of Sports and Chairman, National Sports Commission (NSC), Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, who also represented President Goodluck Jonathan, charged the team to strive for excellence without relying on performance-enhancing substances."Please, those of you who are here should tell those who are not here that We don't want any medal tainted by drug. We want to win medals at the Olympics fair and square and I urge you all to steer clear of banned drugs."I have heared people say that Nigeria is going to London on jamboree but I don't believe in such statement. There is Nigerian spirit and that is why I believe you (athletes) would make Nigeria proud. In spite of our limitations as a country, Nigerians have always excelled under any circumstance and that is the spirit we are taking to the London Olympics."This is a great opportunity for you (athletes) to make your sports popular in Nigeria by coming back home with medals so as to gain attention too being given to football. Let the world know that Nigeria is also good at other sports apart from football," Abdullahi said.
