Oloolu masquerade, 20 others arrested

Published by Tribune on Fri, 06 Jul 2012

THE Oloolu masquerade and his supporters numbering 20 have been arrested over alleged disruption of public peace. The leader of the Oloolu family, Ojetunde Akinleye Asoleke, who led a team to the palace of the Olubadan of Ibadanland to formally lodge complaints to the traditional ruler on Thursday, following a two-day assault, lamented the indiscriminate arrest of about 20 of his supporters, noting that the most unfortunate incident was the undressing of the Oloolu of his traditional regalia as well as his arrest. It will be recalled that some areas in the state capital, including Popoyemoja, Idi-Arere and Beere were in turmoil on Tuesday and Wednesday as a result of the clash between supporters of the masquerade and some aggrieved youths in the affected areas. The masquerade and some of his supporters were severely injured as a result of the fracas, which was described as unprovoked by the leader of the Oloolu family.Asoleke, who holds the title of Olori Alaagbaa of Ibadanland, said the development was a desecration of the culture and tradition of Ibadanland, stating that it was the first time such would happen to the masquerade which comes out annually in the ancient city.He debunked the claim by some local electronic media that the carrier of Oloolu died in the process, adding that the news was mischievous. He, however, disclosed that he was severely injured.'We feel sad by the report that our man was killed as this is far from the truth. No doubt, he was severely wounded as you can all see (pointing at the wounds sustained by the Oloolu on his arm and head), but was not killed.
