Traditional ruler wants govt to prevail on corporate organisations to develop host communities

Published by Tribune on Mon, 09 Jul 2012

The Ovie of Uvwie kingdom, Emmanuel Sideso, has called on the Delta State government to prevail on corporate organisations to assist in developing their host communities.Sideso made the call in Warri, when the Political Adviser to the Governor, Chief Fred Majemite, visited him in his palace.Majemite is presently on advocacy tour of Warri in Delta ahead of the forthcoming local government elections in the state.Sideso said that corporate organisations such as banks and other companies that were expected to help in the development of local communities were not living up to their social responsibilities. He said that government could not develop the state alone and stressed the need for corporate organisations to partner with the government to transform the state. The monarch also appealed to the government to ensure even spread of development projects to all parts of the state rather than concentrating on the state capital alone. He said that the Ekpan complex road in Warri and the Federal University of Petroleum Resources Ogbomiro road, were impassable and were hindering economic activities in those areas. He said that the idea of 'window dressing' of the state whenever important dignitaries were visiting the state should be discontinued, adding that it did not help the state. The traditional ruler urged the state government to be cautious of 'sycophants' in the executive council and other political appointees, who were trying to truncate the good intentions and policies of the government.According to him, some of the appointees are hoarding funds meant for the development of areas under their jurisdiction.Sideso also appealed to the government to appoint a representative of Uvwie into the state executive council to be the voice of the people as there was none presently.Earlier, Majemite said that the essence of the advocacy tour and town hall meeting was to bring governance to the grassroots people.Majemite disclosed that the Delta State government was a detribalised government desirous of listening and meeting the yearnings and aspirations of people at the grassroots.
