Okecha' Writing To Liberate The Ndokwa Nation

Published by Guardian on Mon, 09 Jul 2012

PROFESSOR Steve Okecha, Special Adviser on Technical Education to the Minister of Education recently launched a book titled, 'Now l Know My People: A Commentary on the Ndokwa Nation.' The event, which also saw him lay bare 'Away with the Oligarchs ' a hard knock on oppressors of the people in whatever guise,' took place at St. George's Grammar School hall, Obinnomba, Ukwuani Local Council Area of Delta State. On a day when Okecha's contributions as a member of Conference of Ethnic Nationalities of Niger Delta (CENND) were commended, Okecha said the book was written in furtherance of his crusade for the emancipation of Ndokwa people. The book focuses on a number of vital issues - the history, identity, culture, education, politics, nonchalance and ineptitude, lily livered disposition of the Ndokwa political class and environmental pollution and degradation. It also came hard on leadership, the chieftaincy institution, government insensitivity, fundamental human rights vis--vis Obiaruku Massacre, sharing of government amenities and key political positions, Independent Power Project, core Delta and Delta State 2015 Governorship race.In his remarks, National Co-coordinator, Ethnics Nationalities Movement (ENM), Chief Asemota, who was chairman of the launch said, 'It is my belief that we need, in addition to helping our individual nationalities discover their lost glories, to assist in helping to revamp the psyche of our people generally because it is not only Ndokwa people that need the revamping but all Nigerians.'On his part, Delta state Governor, Emmanuel Uduaghan, who was represented by the Commissioner for Power and Energy, Charles Emetulu, described Professor Okecha as an Ndokwa man to the core. He stated that 'Okecha's positive is on his strong mental capacity, which people hardly display especially as a chemist, stressing that the disappointment Okecha has faced in life never changed him, which informed why the book was produced in positive anger.'Others who corroborated the governor's views of Okecha include the Speaker, Delta State House of Assembly, Victor Ochei, who was represented by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Edward Ogude. Ochei said he holds the author in high esteem. 'Though I was initially excited and confused with the book title, 'Now l know My People,' knowing that the Professor has been with his people for a very long time!'Hon (Dr.) Alphonsus Ojo, Hon. Friday Osanebi, members of the Delta Assembly and Chief launcher, Dr Austin Odili, in their speeches, also noted that the Ndokwa people are not supposed to be where they are today, advising them to change their careless attitude if they must progress. They agreed that the Ndokwa people must rally for unity in the land, change their culture and orientation if the book must bring solution to their problems.
