Jonathan swears in new CJN, honours her with GCON

PRESIDENT Goodluck Jonathan, on Monday, swore into office the first female Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Aloma Mariam Mukhtar and conferred on her the national honour of the Grand Commander of the Order of Niger (GCON).The ceremony took place in the Council Chambers of the Presidential Villa, Abuja.President Jonathan said the new CJN was assuming office at a time when the nation was undergoing reforms in all critical aspects of governance, while he expressed delight that Justice Mukhtar had already pledged to pursue judicial reform.He said he was confident that the new CJN would settle down to work and commence the urgent task of reforming and repositioning the judiciary for effective and efficient discharge of constitutional mandate.According to President Jonathan, 'I have no doubt that your work at our nation's apex court will benefit from your essential character of integrity, humility and courage.'Speaking with State House correspondents shortly after the swearing-in, Justice Mukhtar promised to partner with authorities to ensure that the nation curbed the security menace.On the delay in the dispensation of justice, she said it was not just the problem of the judges but also of lawyers, who brought frivolous applications.
