U.S., Thai scrabble players battle others in Akpabio Classics

THE Nigeria Scrabble Federation (NSF), in conjunction with the Akwa Ibom State Government, is set for the sixth Godswill Akpabio International Classics, which will run from September 26 to 30 at the L'Meridian Hotel and GolfResort, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.NSF Secretary, Eakyns James, told The Guardian yesterday that the classics would feature the masters, intermediate, open and veteran categories. He hinted that the $15,000 star prize being dangled in the masters' category makes the classicsthe biggest in Africa in terms of purse.Among those expected to hit Uyo for the championship are former world champion, Nemitrmansuk Pakorn of Thailand. Pakorn, who ruled the world during the 2009 World Scrabble Champion, is expected to meet stiff opposition in other top scrabble players like Michael Tang of Malaysia and the United States' Sam Katimatis.The NSF scribe noted that the players had indicated interest to participate in the championship. According to him, the classics will be used to select players to represent Nigeria at the Africa Scrabble Championship in Zambia in November.
