Give Nigerians better service, IGP tells CPs

The Inspector General of Police(IGP), M.D. Abubakar, has admonished his commissioners of police to give communities better service from what they are currently getting.According to him , his administration was poised to work harder to meet the needs and expectations of the Nigerian public and 'we must not fail as we should all live above board.'Speaking at a one-day conference on community policing for commissioners of police in Abuja, the IGP charged them to take the lead and utilise the knowledge they had gained from the workshop in their dealings with the general public.He noted that the workshop, organised by the Department for International Development (DFID),with the theme: 'Justice For All: Connecting with our communities' would assist the police to introduce and sustain positive changesThe IGP said that the Nigeria Police needed officers who were confident and competent to exercise judgment and common sense while on the field.He declared: 'Your role in making the reform happen is vital. You are leaders, you are decision makers, facilitators and agents of change. I want to see that change in your respective commands with enhanced delivery of police services in all of your respective communities,' he said. The chairman, Police Service Commission, Parry Osayande, recommended that the Nigeria Police should develop a democratic leadership style for its executive, 'but in exceptional occasions, an autocratic leadership style is more appropriate.
