Plateau crisis: Fulani elders reject Berom's demands

Published by Tribune on Fri, 10 Aug 2012

THE Hausa/Fulani elders in Plateau State have rejected demand for the implementation of reports of previous commissions set up on the lingering crisis in the state, which had claimed hundreds of lives. The Fulanis were in State House, Abuja, on Wednesday night, after a similar visit by Berom leaders on the invitation of President Goodluck Jonathan, who had intervened in the crisis.Ccontrary to the position of the Beroms that reports of previous commissions, including those set up by the state government be implemented, the Fulanis wanted the reports jettisoned, calling for the implementation of that of the Federal Government.Spokesman of the group and former Minister of State (Information and Communication), Alhaji Ibrahim Nakande, while speaking with State House correspondents after the meeting that ended in the early hours of Thursday, said reports of state government commissions had lost relevance.According to him, 'most of the commissions of inquiry, especially those set up by Plateau government, have lost contemporary relevance, but we are confident that the ones set up by Federal Government, especially the General (Emmanuel) Abisoye report, aswell as the advisory committee on Jos crisis, headed by Chief Solomon Lar. We are comfortable with that, but the rest are, in fact, subjudice and, therefore, cannot be implemented.'However, Nakande noted that the meeting with the president was fruitful, as it centred on ways to resolve the crisis in the state.'The discussion was the way forward; how best to tackle the crisis in such a way to enhance tolerance, accommodation and respect for one another, so that at the end of it all, the conflicts would have been put behind us,' he added.Speaking further, Nakande said government was abreast of issues involved and the position of the Fulanis, saying that 'government will look at it and decipher it. Further meetings will be held with other communities that are in conflicts, so that we can jointly find lasting solution to the problem.
