Day BAGS celebrated 7th graduating set, principal

Published by Tribune on Thu, 30 Aug 2012

THEY were all clad in grey suits and white tops with sky blue bow ties to match. They were 17 in number and each had a sash on, displaying his future ambition. They were the seventh graduating set of the Bishop Akinyele Grammar School, Oke-Are, Ibadan, Oyo State. The valedictory ceremony, which featured a church service and a reception, was held on the school premises recently. In his sermon, the guest preacher, the Venerable B.B.O. Obaweya, noted that seven was the number of perfection and that the school had taught her students the reality of life which no author would teach them.Obaweya, however, appreciated the tenacity of the retiring school principal, Venerable E.B. Mabadeje, who had been on the staff of the school since 2000, adding that he did his best for the school, the staff and the students. 'What next' Who would replace Mabadeje' How is he/she going to be like'' He enthused. He however urged the staff and students not to fret as there is a God who knows their tomorrow, giving them reasons to be confident in God. According to Obaweya, God has a plan for every life; a method of doing something planned out in advance and has given assurance, a promise to everybody. The Venerable noted that God made provision for every man in advance; asking 'What is it you need in this world that God has not made provision for even before He made man''The man of God also admonished the graduating set not to take the freedom they were entering into as would-be students of tertiary institutions for granted as 'freedom not properly utilised can injure and harm you.' He cited himself as an example for the students, of how he misused his freedom in the university and ended up having a second class upper instead of a first class. In his welcome address, Venerable Mabadeje, the school's foundation principal, appreciated the Rt Revd Dr G.I.O. Olajide (rtd) for giving him the opportunity to execute his vision of founding the school; the Most Revd Dr and Mrs J.O. Akinfenwa for encouraging and elevating him to the post of a Venerable and the school's board members, PTA, staff and students for their support. He noted that the school won the Best School Unit Award of the Nigerian Red Cross Society, Oyo State Youth Wing in December 2005; became the Zonal Champion at the Bible Society of Nigeria's annual quiz competition for Oyo, Kwara and Osun states in November 2008; beat 58 other schools to come first at the 2010 Team Spirit in Excellence competition organised by Macmillan Nigeria Publishers Ltd. and the winner out of 32 schools at the first ever World Diabetes Foundation's Strategies for Improving Diabetes Care in Nigeria (SIDCAIN) Eaglets Health Club's competition held in March 2012, among others.
