Flood: Oyo govt gets N93.2m from donors

The Oyo State government said it had received N93.2 million in assistance from donors toward preventing flood disasters.This was contained in a statement issued on Monday in Ibadan by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media, Dr Festus Adedayo.He said plans were in place to ensure that the August 26, 2011 disaster did not re-occur.Adedayo said part of the funds had already been channelled into reconstructing damaged bridges, river dredging, unblocking of drains and massive sensitisation campaigns.He attributed the cause of last year's flood to climate change resulting from global warming.``As at now, contracts have been awarded for the reconstruction of the major bridges and roads affected during the flood and works are ongoing steadily on them.`` Demolition of structures erected on statutory set-backs is being effected.`` As at now, over 60 houses on flood plains have been demolished and more are still slated for demolition.``Also, enforcement of rules and regulations on compliance with environmental laws is being vigorously pursued,'' Adedayo said.He said government had begun the Disaster Risk Reduction Effort as a contingency task schedule of the Oyo State Environmental Management Agency.Adedayo also announced a N200 million partnership with the World Bank to channel the 30 kilometre Ona River and reconstruct the Eleyele Dam's broken slabs.
