2015: Gang up against PDP will fail 'Gemade

Published by Tribune on Fri, 31 Aug 2012

AGAINST the background of alliance talks between the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) and the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) ahead of the 2015 election, a former national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Barnabas Gemade, has said any gang up against the ruling party will fail. Fielding questions from newsmen at Legacy House, annex of the PDP national secretariat in Abuja, he said it would not be the first time such plot was hatched against the PDP, but it had failed on each occasion. Senator Gemade, who represents Benue State in the Senate, wondered why the PDP would be worried about opposition alliance when it had not worked out in the past, saying 'the PDP should not be afraid of the gang up, it is not new.'He stressed that even if the ACN and the CPC managed to reach an accord, it would be of no consequence, as the PDP would continue its winning streak, because of its geographical spread.'As far as the political equation is concerned, you are talking about six or seven states versus 23 states. So, by simple arithmetic, you will tell me whether a party that is on the ground in six states is likely to dethrone the one that is firmly on the ground in 23 states of the federation,' he said.On the 14 years anniversary of the PDP which comes up today, Senator Gemade said though the party has had a checkered history as a result of 'wrongs hands in leadership,' it had largely remained a 'fantastic party.' He identified factors such as placing of personal interest above party interest and lack of inclusiveness on the part of election winners as the bane of the PDP in the past.
