FG approves N600bn to reposition NPC

The Federal Government has approved N600billion for the repositioning of the National Population Commission (NPC). The chairman of the commission, Eze Festus Odimegwu, disclosed this in Abuja while playing host to participants of the National Security Training Seminar coordinated by the Defence Intelligence School.Eze Odimegwu said the NPC had evolved a new mission and vision that is concerned about making the NPC the population centre of excellence in Africa.He said the mission and vision had been presented to the National Executive Council and had been approved by President Goodluck Jonathan.To drive the mission and vision, he said the president had approved the sum of N600billion which would be deployed in all departments of the NPC.Disclosing that the repositioning would be driven by the National Population Management Committee, which will be chaired by the vice-president, the NPC boss said the conduct of the 2016 national headcount would witness a dramatic turnaround especially with its well-funded ICT programmes.While applauding the visit of the participants of the training seminar drawn from the Army, Navy, Air Force, ministries, Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) and the Central Bank of Nigeria, Eze Odimegwu said the issue of security historically belonged to the government, before it later transformed it into an entrepreneurial mechanism.He further disclosed that the components of human population impacted directly on national security, adding that an in-depth knowledge of population dynamics would go a long way in the drive towards a highly secured nation state.Responding, the coordinator of the course, Wing Commander Idris Hassan (retd), said he brought the participants to the NPC to enable them have an insight into the workings of the commission and its relevance to national security.
