N5m for grabs at CBN Gov's cup

THE 26th edition of the Central Bank Governor's Cup kicks off across four centres in the country, as N5 million is up for grabs as prize monies.Lagos, Abeokuta, Lokoja and Minna will all host group matches for the annual all financial institutions games in what has come to be regarded as the FA cup of bank from the September 24 to October 13.Briefing newsmen on behalf of the management of the apex bank, Mr Ugo Okoroafor who is the Corporate Communications director said the prize money has been hiked from initial N3.5 million to N5 million, all in a bid to shore up respectability for the tournament that has become a national event in the sports calender of the organisation.''The prize for the winner of the Governor's cup is now 2 million naira, while the runner-up goes home with N1.5 million, the third place team takes 1 million naira while the fourth place team is assured of N500,000,'' noting that it is part of the apex bank's corporate social responsibility.The competition which is being held in conjunction with the NFF, according to the bank chieftain, also has as part of its objectives complementing the efforts of the nation's football house in its grassroot development philosophy.''This has become so because several micro-finance institutions, which represent the grassroot are participating in this edition''.Speaking on behalf of the president of the NFF Dr Sanusi Mohammed, head of competitions in the NFF said the annual CBN Governors cup has become an integral part of the nations football calender, and therefore eulogised the apex bank for holding forth since inception in 1979.The Lagos centre will play host to Union bank,Johan Investment, Lagos, Alekim MFB and Access bank in group A, while Abeokuta which is tagged group B will host teams like Union Assurance, Federal Ministry of Finance, Saduqma MFB of Minna, Peace MFB of Ijebu-Ode and Security and Exchange [SEC]..Lokoja which is group C will host CBN Abuja, First bank, Enterprise bank, Office of the Accountant General of the Federation and Dadinkowa FC. The likes of Unity bank, KakaDudu, Babawa NB of Jos and Tangale MFB will play in Minna.The finals will be graced by the Governor of the CBN Mallam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi.
