Keshi was wrong to have invited Mikel

Published by Tribune on Thu, 27 Sep 2012

SUPER Eagles' team list for the crucial Nations Cup qualifier final leg released on Tuesday has received knocks from former Assistant Secretary General Technical of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), James Peters, as he poured cold water on the invitation of Chelsea midfielder, John Mikel Obi and Lazio of Italy young sensation Onazi Ogenyi.According to the former technical chieftain of the Glasshouse, Stephen Keshi should have concluded his Nations Cup qualification campaign before inviting the duo for the real tournament, as inviting them now will affect the tactical profile the team is already working itself into.'Mikel Obi, no doubt, is one of our best foreign based players, but if you ask me, he has no business in that team for now on account of the level of cohesion already achieved with those he (Keshi) had been prosecuting the qualification with, Mikel's inclusion at this point technically will affect the play philosophy and speed of the team.' He added that the same sentiment applies to Ogenyi. He underlined his position further by observing that prosecuting qualification matches and the tournament proper should entail diverse technical approaches.'If I were Keshi I will not bring in any fresh player into the fold for now. It will break the flow of the tactical profile, because most of those on that list have been prosecuting his qualification programme. My advice is that the likes of Mikel and Onazi should have come in when preparing for the tournament, after picking the ticket,' he added.
