UK lawmakers ask NGOs to lift Nigeria

Published by Guardian on Fri, 28 Sep 2012

NON-governmental organisations (NGOs) have been charged by the British All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) to be active in the renewed efforts to develop Nigeria. The lawmakers, who praised the Nigeria Leadership Initiative (NLI) for being a critical actor in the development of Nigeria, said real change could be brought to specific areas and communities if organisations such as NLI were supported to link up with effective international partners. In their 2012 report on Nigeria to the House of Commons after a delegation of APPG visited the country on a fact-finding mission last April, the lawmakers rated NLI as an active supporter of growth and development in the country. The mission, which took the lawmakers to different parts of the country, focused on youth population, reform agenda, business environment and security. It stated: 'Nigeria's international partners that host large diaspora groups and are interested in supporting development and reform efforts would greatly benefit from effective engagement of these diaspora bodies and individuals. The Nigeria Leadership Initiative is an example of an organisation that brings together professionals in the country and internationally to support development of value-based leadership skills with the aim of supporting development in Nigeria.'APPG comprises British members of parliament (MPs) from all political parties. It was in Nigeria to create a better understanding of the country among British parliamentarians. It seeks to build good relations and support efforts to promote development and social justice in Nigeria.NLI, a non-profit and non-partisan group, provides a platform for accomplished Nigerian leaders to develop their leadership skills to drive positive change in the country.
