Published by Tribune on Thu, 27 Sep 2012

The Federal RoadSafety Corps(FRSC), Zone 2, comprising Lagos and Ogun states, has arrested 51,151 traffic offenders for violating 59,255 traffic offences of 2012.Stating this was the Zonal Commanding Officer,RS2HQ Lagos, Ademola Lawal, at the FRSC Zone 2 annual retreat held at the weekend in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, with the theme "Zero Tolerance to Road Traffic Crashes."The Assistant Corps Marshal while reviewing the number of road traffic crashes recorded between May-August along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, said it had reduced by 38 per cent.Lawal maintained that areas prone to road traffic crashes in the zone would continue to receive priority in resources deployment, adding that enforcement had also been beefed up along the major corridors in the zone.He said, " A comparative analysis of RTC along Lagos-Ibadan Expressway showed that deaths had reduced. Out of 185 recorded RTC cases between May-August 2011, 82 persons were killed, while out of 184 recorded RTC cases between May-August 2012, 51 persons were killed. This irrefutably translates to 38 per cent reduction in deaths in the period under review."Also, in the first half of 2012, 51,151 traffic offenders were also arrested for violating 59,255 traffic offences."In his remarks, the Corps Marshal and Chief Executive, FRSC, Osita Chidoka, said the theme of the retreat was timely considering the Corps determination to reduce carnages on the highways, especially in the ember months. He said that Nigeria, over years, had a bad case for global road crash incidence, saying the creation of FRSC with the initiative of organising credible policies and programmes had put her on the track towards its restoration as a road safety-friendly country. The Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Rt.Hon.Suraj Ishola, called for more proactive measures in effort towards attaining significant reduction in road traffic crashes.Adekunbi added that there was need to instill sanity into the psyche of road users in the zone.
