Published by Tribune on Fri, 28 Sep 2012

FRONTLINE Sports Philantropist and Educationist, Mrs Clementina Doregos has hailed President Goodluck Jonathan for rewarding the Paralympians that did the country proud at the London 2012 Paralympics as well as members of the national U-20 Women National Team, the Falconets.Doregos said the decision to honour the achievers will encourage other athletes to always put in their best for the country. The renowned educationist said the gesture shown to the athletes would speed up sports development in the country as more youths will show keen interest in sports which in turn will help to check civil unrest which has engulfed the country in recent time.'I am delighted for what Mr President has done to our heroes by appreciating them. It goes to show that this regime has the interest of our youths at heart. As a mother I am really touched that at least for the first time in recent years we are beginning to honour our heroes who toil day and night to bring laurels to the country despite the fact that we did not support them before they left the country'.Doregos who sponsored the yearly Doregos Inter-schools Basketball Championship and the Abesan Football Championship however wants the Federal Government to provide enabling environment that will enable Nigeria Athletes to compete favourably with their counterpart.'The Federal Government should provide sports facilities where Athletes can train for World Championship. In America, Britain, Russia there are sports Facilities and equipments for all their Athlethes. In the city of London alone there are 19 stadia with modern facilities we can do the same here. Government should also ensure our athletes are educated by providing scholarships for them so that they can have a platform to fall back on when they retire from sports.President Goodluck Jonathan recently awarded 5 Million, 3 Million and 2 Million Naira respectively to Gold Medalist, Silver medalist and Bronze medalist respectively for doing the country proud at the last Paralympics held in London. He also awarded cash prizes to those that failed to win medals as well as their coaches. The largesse continues for members of the Falconets and their technical crewPlovdiv now sit 10th in the league table, while the win lifted Vratsa off the bottom.
