Ondo govt provides 600,000 tree seedlings

The Ondo State government has said ithad provided 600,000 tree seedlings for plantations at its 16 forest reserves.The Commissioner for Natural Resources, Alhaji Lasisi Oluboyo, in Akure that people were being encouraged to plant trees to protect their environment.Oluboyo said the seedlings were available freely at the seven nurseries in the state for members of the public, particularly house owners.The commissioner said the ministry established 275 hectares of plantation with different kinds of trees such as Tick, Mahogany, Messenia and Obeche for sustainability.``Some of these indigenous trees are being felled without replacement, but we want to encourage our people to plant trees in replacement of those they are felling.''Oluboyo said 50 hectares of land at Igbara-Oke Forest Reserves would be covered with plantation of both foreign and local trees.Other reserves are Owo, Ala, Oluwa, Idanre, Akure and Olumo.The commissioner advised people to plant trees at residential areas to serve as wind breakers, for beautification purpose and other reasons.
