Communities appeal for govt's intervention to save schools

The deplorablestate of public primary schools in communities within Ijebu North Local Government Area of Ogun State has become a source of concern to residents in the area.A visit by Community News to Local Government Primary Schools in Abobi/Atikori; and Osunbudepo villages, showed clear evidence that pupils in the affected schools were not learning under a conducive environment.The two schools, according to findings, were founded in 1955, while the one at Osunbudepo received attention last in 2005 with the construction of a block of two classrooms.According to a community leader in Osunbudepo, Alfa Hamzat Aliyu, the deplorable condition of the school needed urgent attention, urging the state government to come to its rescue.Aliyu noted that the school, over the years, had been in a state of neglect despite efforts by stakeholders to save it from total collapse.He told Community News that a team from the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), visited the school recently and promised the readiness of the board to address various challenges confronting the school.According to him, the school lacked classrooms, toilets, headteacher and assistant headteacher's offices and lacked desks and benches for the pupils.Community News gathered that the facilities on ground were not enough to cater for the 250 pupils of the school.For Mrs. Iyabo Ilori, a resident of Abobi/Atikori, she urged the present administration in the state to begin the renovation of rural schools as being done in the urban centres.
