Market location threatens school in Ikorodu

Published by Tribune on Thu, 11 Oct 2012

The delay in thedemolition of theIkorodu Market in Lagos State has compounded the security and learning challenges of the Oga Primary School, Ikorodu. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that the market is sharing a fence with the primary school. This has made it easy for hoodlums and others to easily gain access to the school. Also, this distracts the school pupils who sometimes watch traders bathe naked. They also pick up used condoms within the school premises each morning. The state government has marked the market for demolition to pave way for the expansion of the Ikorodu Road but the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) handling the contract has yet to execute it.The market is to be relocated to Sabo in Ikorodu.NAN investigations on Tuesday revealed that unwanted persons were still gaining entrance to the school premises through the market and vandalising some property, as well as distract pupils. The school's headmistress, Mrs Olufunmilayo Olatunji, told NAN that hoodlums had finally taken over the school.``Some of the classroom doors have been destroyed by these hoodlums. They force their ways into the classrooms to pass the night.``Some of the dirt and waste generated by these hoodlums are thrown into the school.``This affects learning, because it now attracts an extra time to clean the dirt,'' she said. The headmistress appealed to the CECC to begin work on the market soon to create a conducive learning and teaching environment for the school. However, the Supervisory Councillor for Education in the Ikorodu Local Government, Mr Adedeji Osho, gave the assurance that the demolition would soon be done.``We are sure that the market and the hoodlums will be taken care of very soon.``We just need the pupils, teachers and parents to be patient with the local government,'' he said.According to Osho, the CCECC has begun to set up its equipment in preparation for the demolition.NAN reported that the equipment of the CCECC was at the site, but none of the workers and contractors was seen there.
