Liverpool vs. Roma: Score, Reaction from 2016 Preseason Friendly

Monday night from Busch Stadium in St. Louis provided a rematch of the 1984 European Cup Final in a far more casual setting as Roma defeated Liverpool 2-1 in an international friendly.This was the third time since 2012 that Roma and Liverpool met in the United States for a friendly. The first two meetings came at Boston's Fenway Park in 2012 and 2014 with Roma also reigning supreme in those matches.Bosnian striker Edin Dzeko, who formerly applied his traits in the Premier League with Manchester City, fired the Italian side in front after 29 minutes.Coolly taking a ball down around 35 yards from goal, Dzeko weaved his way toward the top of the box and placed a low shot that rolled just past the outstretched arm of Alex Manninger.On the stroke of halftime, Sheyi Ojo drew Liverpool level thanks to the Reds' aerial domination in the box. Off a corner, defender Dejan Lovren headed the ball back across goal, where the 19-year-old Ojo was unmarked.With a bending flick of the head, Monday night's fixture went into halftime all knotted up.In the 63rd minute, another former Premier Leaguer put Liverpool down a goal once again. Mohamed Salah, who formerly played for Chelsea, was in the right place at the right time when a cross was powerfully headed toward substitute keeper Simon Mignolet by Dzeko, who saved the initial chance well.But the rebound popped straight up, and a slow-responding Mignolet only watched as Salah poked home the rebound from close range.Liverpool was tantalizingly close to an equalizer when a free kick fell to the head of Danny Ings in the 86th minute. He redirected the cross toward goal, but goalkeeper Alisson Becker got down well to parry it away and eliminate Liverpool's final chance of the evening.It's a solid preseason debut for Roma as it has just two August friendlies before the Serie A season starts up. It'll play the Montreal Impact on Wednesday before opening the season against Udinese on Aug. 20.Liverpool will need all the preseason help it can get because the start of the Premier League season won't be kind to them. Four of its first five matches feature 90 minutes against Arsenal, Tottenham, Leicester City and Chelsea.It'll have another opportunity to tune its game against a far more difficult opponent in Barcelona on Saturday at Wembley Stadium.
