This guy paid $1,300 to play 'No Man's Sky' early ' and he's already beaten the game

Published by Business Insider on Tue, 02 Aug 2016

Would you pay 20 times the retail value of a game to play it a week early'That's exactly what Reddit user daymeeuhn did in order to play "No Man's Sky" several days ahead of its official release date on August 9.He purchased the highly-anticipated space exploration game for a whopping $1,300 on eBay from someone who was selling a (likely illegally acquired) physical copyof the game.In a video he posted online, you can see him unwrapping the package after it arrived, popping it in his PlayStation 4, and shaking with excitement as he waits for it to install. He even had a bottle of champagne ready to go to commemorate the occasion.(Mild NSFW language warning.)Understandably, a lot of you are probably wondering why someone would spend so much money on a video game. In a lengthy post on Reddit, he explained his reasoning, some of which we've excerpted below:"We all have things that make us who we are, and each of us have our own triggers of what's 'normal' or what's 'too much' or what's 'completely insane,' etc., and it can be difficult to express that one person finds something normal when another finds it completely insane. The person seeing it as insane can't even remotely fathom the logic behind the guy that sees it as normal, and I totally get that.I'm a lucky guy. I've done well for myself. I have disposable income and I'm happy in life. I'm in a state of being where I don't look at a purchase and determine the overall value by the price tag, but rather by how much happiness it will bring myself or the people I care about."Though there's plenty of other things to do, the main goal of "No Man's Sky" is to reach the center of the universe, which daymeeuhn claims to have done after about 30 hours of playtime. He posted many of his thoughts on Reddit, which he tried to keep spoiler-free, but definitely don't read it if you want to experience the game for yourself. And if this is the first you're hearing of "No Man's Sky," the gist is this: You play as an explorer, set loose on a massive galaxy. You can choose to catalog wildlife, fly through space, chat with a planet's local population, and explore alien ruins. All told, there are 18 quintillion planets to explore, all of which were generated by a mathematical equation. It's definitely one of the most ambitious and most intriguing games of the year, so it's not hard to see why it has inspired such fervor. While we're excited to get our hands on it,we're not quite willing to spend $1,300 to do so. We'll be waiting to play it with all of you when it comes out on August 9 for PlayStation 4 and PC.SEE ALSO:The unwritten rules of working at a startup that no one likes to talk aboutJoin the conversation about this storyNOW WATCH: 5 hidden features only PlayStation 4 power users know about
