Dalungs Gaffe

Published by Leadership on Fri, 12 Aug 2016

Minister of Sports, Solomon Dalung has been in the news for the wrong reasons. He is probably the most popular minister in the social media right now. The ministers tenure so far, can be described as unsettled, full with comedy of errors. Last week, Dalung, who was addressing newsmen on why the U-23 football team was yet to leave for Rio, Brazil, referred to the country as United States of Nigeria. When he was asked to explain why the team was stranded in the US, the minister said, Our U-23 team is suffering in the United States of Nigeria. So obviously I have been living in the United States of Nigeria without my knowledge. He also took his comedy a step further by saying, Who took them there' What are they there for' Because they are under-23 and they went to the US. Now they are having problems, does that become our business' Nigerians have come down hard on the minister for this blunder. Nigeria sunk to the lowest ebb during the preparation for the Olympics as our athletes practically beg for funds on the social media, plunging the country into a new level of embarrassment. Based on shoddy preparations and the unserious disposition of the Sports minister, I dont expect team Nigeria to do well at this Olympics. So far, only the football team is doing the country proud against all odds. We are obviously in Rio to make up the numbers as a matter of political courtesy. Right now, the sports ministers ratings has hit the iceberg, and like the titanic, its sinking to the lowest ebb. I think President Muhammadu Buhari should remove Dalong from the sports ministry, he is a typical case of round peg in a square hole. Nigerians are eager to see the last of his red beret. Maybe he should be shipped to another less known ministry. Better still, the sports ministry should be scrapped and let the National Sports Commission (NSC) be in charge of sports in Nigeria. Former sports men and women should be allowed to run the NSC as it is becoming clearer by the day that the sports ministry is not needed.
