Keffi Residents Decry Exorbitant House Rent

Published by Leadership on Fri, 19 Aug 2016

Residents of Keffi in Nasarawa state have decried exorbitant rent being charged by landlords in the town.A survey conducted by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Keffi showed that tenants were paying very high rent in area.According to the survey, in low density areas like GRA and other choice residential areas, the rent for one bedroom, two bedroom and three bedroom apartments cost between N250,000 to N800,000 annually. In high density areas, the rent ranges between N150,000 to N200,000 for one bedroom flat, while the rent of two bedroom flat cost between N250,000 to N300,000.The rent for three bed room flat goes for between N350,000 to N400, 000.The survey showed that the high rent might not be unconnected with the influx of people into the town due to insurgency in some parts of the North.A resident Mr Muhammad Isa told NAN that he was shocked to find out that Keffi was at par with Abuja in terms of high cost of rent.He said that he left his state to Keffi last year due to the Boko Haram crisis. He said he could not afford an apartment in the town due to the exorbitant rent.Isa said that agents were not helping matters, saying that they contributed to the high rent demanded by landlords.Ms Grace Bakare a civil servant, said that rent was on the high side in Keffi due to its proximity to Abuja.NAN reports that Keffi had witnessed tremendous physical developments in terms of housing and other infrastructure in recent time.
