How the NBA MVP Voting Process Works, Announcement Date

Published by Bleacher Report on Sat, 15 Apr 2017

A year ago, the NBA announced Stephen Curry had been named the league's Most Valuable Player in unanimous fashion on May 10.This year, fans will have to wait until after the season is over to find out if Russell Westbrook, James Harden, Kawhi Leonard or LeBron James is handed the league's most prized individual hardware. That's because, unlike years past, the NBA has decided to transition away from mid-postseason announcements and formulate an awards showone that commissioner Adam Silver told Bleacher Report'sThe Full 48podcast with Howard Beck and Jordan Brenner will take after the Golden Globesthat will air June 26.But before honors are doled out, all of the results need to be tabulated. And for the 2016-17 season, things are slated to proceed a bit differently.Although team radio and television broadcasters used to be eligible voters, the rules have changed this year to exclude them. According to Pacers radio broadcaster Mark Joseph Boyle, the league cited a conflict of interest for revoking voting privileges from team employees:Under the revised rules, the voting panel will now be made up of 100 independent media members who are not affiliated with teams, according to Yahoo Sports' Ben Rohrbach.Once the results are announced June 26, they'll be made available to the public at NBA.com/Official. As a reminder, each media member's vote from last year can be viewed here. The league's inaugural awards show will be broadcast on TNT from Pier 36 in New York City. Rookie of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, Coach of the Year and Most Improved Player, among other honors, will also be handed out.
