Anne Hathaway Opens Up About Dealing With Internalized Misogyny In Hollywood

Published by Huffington Post on Fri, 21 Apr 2017

Anne Hathaway is coming clean about one form of Hollywood sexism that nobody talks about: internalized misogyny. The actress, who currently stars in the dark comedy Colossal, revealed in an interview with ABC Newson Wednesday that internalized misogyny affected the way she interacted with female directors in the past.Hathaway specifically cited her experience filming the 2011 drama One Day, directed by Lone Scherfig, revealing that she didnt give [Scherfig] everything that she needed because on some level, the actress didnt fully trust her as a filmmaker.I am to this day scared that the reason I didnt trust her the way I trust some of the other directors I work with is because shes a woman, Hathaway said. I hope people understand that its hard to admit. The star went on to say that in the past, she would scrutinize scripts from first-time female directors, focusing on what was wrong with it.I can only acknowledge that Ive done that and I dont want to do that anymore, Hathaway explained.Hathaway vowed to call Scherfig with an apology after the public admission. A rep for Scherfig released a statement via ABC:Lone Scherfig is deep in pre-production of her next film and is consumed by it. She asked me to express her love and admiration for Anne and her work.Actress Jessica Chastain also chimed in with a message of support to Hathaway:Wise words and very brave to talk about this. So much love for this lady https://t.co/JTuCr53k9o Jessica Chastain (@jes_chastain) April 19, 2017 Women supporting women is a beautiful thing. To view the full interview, head over to ABC News. -- This feed and its contents are the property of The Huffington Post, and use is subject to our terms.
