Frank Vogel Rumors: Magic Expected to Fire HC After Season

Frank Vogel's time in Orlando may be nearing an end.On Friday, Marc Stein of theNew York Times(h/t Pro Basketball Talk's Dan Feldman) reported the Orlando Magic are expected to fire their second-year coach following the conclusion of the 2017-18 NBA season."Orlando's ongoing malaise, especially after the promise of an unexpected 8-4 start, make it a widely held assumption in coaching circles that Vogel will be dismissed after the franchise's sixth successive season out of the playoffs," Stein wrote.At 21-51, the Magic are tied for the worst record in the Eastern Conference with the Atlanta Hawks. According to Josh Robbins of theOrlando Sentinel, Vogel is two years into a four-year deal, with the fourth year being a team option.The 44-year-old coach is 50-104 in Orlando after piling up a 250-181 record and five playoff appearances in six seasons with the Indiana Pacers.Last year, Orlando made big changes in its front office. The organization hiredToronto Raptors general manager Jeff Weltman as itsnewpresident of basketball operationsand Milwaukee Bucks general manager John Hammond as itsGM.Those moves came following Vogel's first season with the team.Given the Magic are on track to see a drop in wins for the second consecutive campaign, the front office may choose to start over with someone it wants in charge.It hasn't helped Vogel's cause that Jonathan Isaac, last year's sixth overall pick, has been limited to 25 games this season because of ankle and foot injuries.Finishing on a strong note may help Vogel's chances of retaining the job, but it would hurt the franchise's chances at landing the No. 1 overall pick in June's draft. Regardless of how the final 10 games play out, Orlando will have a decision to make.
