THE GOVERNORS' GOOD SENSE

Published by Tribune on Thu, 29 Sep 2011

THEY deserve nothing but commendation for their sense of responsibility. While making a case for the removal of fuel subsidy, the governors of the 36 states of the federation had argued that the subsidy no longer made sense, since 'it was no longer relevant because ordinary Nigerians meant to be the major beneficiaries of the scheme had been sidelined.'THE governors look pretty being united for a 'good cause' but one cannot but wonder if the subsidy, which Nigerian National Petroleum Company's Group Public Affairs Officer, Dr Levi Ajuonuma, put at N79.70 will be put to any better use than is currently being done ' to line some private scoundrel's pockets.ACCORDING to Ajuonuma, the landing cost of petrol is N129.21, transport margin for transporters and marketers, N14.49, making a total expected pump price of N144.70. The total amount on subsidy is put at N2.6 billion per day.THAT is why the allegation by Peter Esele of Trade Union Congress (TUC) that government is broke should be condemned by all. He claims government is only seeking cheap money to finance projects without pruning recurrent expenditure.WHERE is the excess in the governments' recurrent expenditure currently' In the security votes, ecological fund or legislators'emoluments' Where else does he expect public officers to feed if not on the poor masses who have refused to die' When oppressors unite, the pleibeans can only groan.
