Villas-Boas, Hodgson lament over Eagles

Published by Tribune on Wed, 12 Oct 2011

SUPER Eagles' failure to make it to the 2012 Africa Nations Cup next year yesterday raised international concerns with Andre Villa-Boas and Roy Hodgson describing the disappointment as a disaster.Chelsea coach, Villas-Boas wonders how his player, John Mikel Obi, feels at the moment.''I hope Mikel comes strong from this just like he did in his father's case,'' the Portuguese trainer said in reference to the abduction of the player's father last month.''He went to Nigeria full of hope of playing at the Nations Cup and the Super Eagles have a lot of fans worldwide. It's big miss.West Brom coach, Roy Hodgson described Eagles' fate as a big blow. "For one of the top five countries in Africa not to qualify must be a big blow,'' said Hodgson, who handles Nigerian hitman, Osaze Odemwingie. He feels for Odemwingie whom he senses must be under severe criticism."I don't know what happened in the Nigeria game but I do know they didn't qualify, which must be a disaster for a country of Nigeria's status."I would imagine the criticism at the moment must be enormous, and I'm sure Peter once again has looked to his troubled ankle."Hodgson expects Odemwingie to be available to face Wolves on Sunday."Peter was as fit as a butcher's dog when he left here to go to Nigeria," the Albion chief added."I can't say what happened in the Nigeria game but after our match against Sunderland, and in the games leading up to it, there was no suggestion whatsoever that he had any injury problems and as a result he went off to play for Nigeria 100 per cent fit.""I don't know if anything happened in the Nigeria game, but we don't have any information to that effect."
