Nigerian players missing in quarter-'inal, as Adegoke laments exit

Published by Guardian on Thu, 20 Oct 2011

JUST like in 2010, Nigerian players will not be part of the quarterfinal matches of this year's Governor's Cup Lagos Tennis Championship.Like a pack of card, they continued their free fall at the tournament as foreigners dominated proceedings in the second round matches. From the qualifiers to the first round, the local players failed to match most of their foreign counterparts and this continued yesterday in the second round, with Destiny Da-Silva leading the crash when he lost to his Cote d'Ivoire opponent. Also yesterday, Kingsley Enosoregbe failed to contain the competition's number two seed, Indian Karan Rastogi, as the Nigerian was a shadow of himself against his more experienced opponent. Abdulmumini Babalola faced the tournament's number one seed, Slovak Kamil Capkovic, and tried his best to register the country's presence in the third round. However, his opponent made sure that Babalola never achieved his aim despite the huge support the Nigerian got from the home fans. The European advanced after downing Babalola 6-4, 6-1. Shehu Lawal was no match to Indian Virali Murugesan, who bundled him out in two straight sets.Candy Idoko also bowed to Indian Vijayant Malik 6-1, 6-2 in his last match. For Adegoke, it was a sad end as she had determined to turn the table against Ukraine's Elina Svitolina. But things went wrong for the teenage sensation after she was dazed 6-0, 6-0.A disappointed Adegoke told The Guardian yesterday that she was yet to understand what befell her during the encounter, saying: 'I cannot just explain what happened in the match because I was really determined to win the encounter.
