MTN, Etisalat to compensate BlackBerry users

Published by Punch on Mon, 24 Oct 2011

Following last weeks global BlackBerry service disruptions, telecommunications companies, MTN Nigeria and Etisalat Nigeria, have said they will compensate their customers.MTN said it would compensate all customers on the service with a four-day extension on their current subscription. A statement by the company on Thursday said the compensation package was coming in spite of the fact that the outage was caused by a server failure from Research in Motion, the global provider of BlackBerry services. According to MTNs Corporate Services Executive, Mr. Akinwale Goodluck, the compensation package is for the inconveniences MTN customers experienced during the downtime. "MTN is a customer-focused organisation and we are aware of the inconveniences our customers suffered during the downtime. That is why, in spite of the fact that the three-day BlackBerry disruption was caused by an incident outside our control, we will extend by four days, the subscription of affected prepaid and post-paid BlackBerry subscribers," he said. Also,Etisalat Nigeria has announced it will compensate its BlackBerry customers on both prepaid and post-paid accounts following a widespread outage reported by BlackBerrys manufacturer, Research-in-Motion. In a statement on Thursday, the company said the prepaid customers would receive the equivalent of three days free usage, while monthly bills of post-paid subscribers would be adjusted to reflect the additional three days. The Chief Commercial Officer, Etisalat Nigeria, Mr. Wael Ammar, said, "Keeping our customers satisfied is a priority for us and given the exceptional and extraordinary circumstances, we are compensating our BlackBerry users to demonstrate our care for their loyalty to our company."
