SSS quizzes CMD for rejecting Oct 1 crash victim

Published by Punch on Mon, 24 Oct 2011

TheState Security Services has commenced an investigation into the death of a 64-year-old businesswoman, Mrs. Abigail James, at the National Hospital, Abuja. The deceased was allegedly rejected by nurses in the hospital following an order fromabove that patients should not be admitted in anticipation that there might be bomb blast victims following the threat by the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta and Boko Haram to bomb Abuja during the 51st independence anniversary. The SSS last week quizzed no fewer than seven staff members of the hospital, including its Chief Medical Director.Others quizzed are the hospitals Head, Management Information Services, Mr. Tayo Haastrup, and an unidentified nurse attached to the Accident and Emergency Department, who reportedly said they were acting on orders from above. Our correspondent learnt on Sunday that one of the nurses, on annual leave, was ordered by the SSS to report for questioning over the incident.Another senior staff member of the hospital, said to have travelled abroad, has also been invited for interrogation.James was involved in an auto crash on October 1 in Utako area of Abuja while coming from the market. She was said to have died at the hospital following her rejection by nurses. The son-in-law of the deceased told our correspondent that the corpse was in a terrible state when it was taken home for burial. It was learnt that in spite of allegedly collecting the sum of N20,000 from relatives of the deceased for embalmment of the corpse, the hospital allegedly did nothing. He also alleged that part of the money the woman tied on her waist while coming from the market was stolen.A source said, The Presidency is interested in the matter, particularly because of the reference to orders from above directing that no patient should be admitted in anticipation of bomb blast victims. The Federal Government has heard a lot of complaints and the rot in National Hospital and I can assure you that they wont escape this one.The SSS on Friday also quizzed Dr. Abiye Kalaiwo, a medical practitioner with TREM Vision House medical team.
