Eagles job: Ezeugo slams lobbyists

Published by Punch on Fri, 28 Oct 2011

Former Super Eagles defender Emeka Ezeugo has slammed some of the countrys former players for indicating interest in the Eagles job, saying it was unfortunate for them to position themselves for a job that is not vacant. Eagles coach, Samson Siasias future as the teams coach will be decided on Friday (today) during the executive board meeting of the Nigeria Football Federation in Abuja. But the widely-travelled Ezeugo said he smelt a rat in the intentions of those already aspiring for the top coaching job. "I am shocked to know that some people are already positioning themselves for the job. Its not the right time to do that," Ezeugo said in Lagos on Thursday. "How can you position yourself for a job that is not vacant' Those who make football decisions in the country are behind these guys who are lobbying already. Theres a lot of mess out there." Ezeugo and Siasia were part of the Eagles at the 1994 World Cup and both again coached together during Siasias short stint at local side Heartland, with Ezeugo his assistant. But on the issue of Siasias future, the former Denmark-based player said sentiments should not be attached in the decision that would be taken today (Friday). Ezeugo said, "Coaching is a performance-oriented job; you dont perform, you go. You dont need a second chance when you dont perform. Sentiments are not part of the business. But even if he (Siasia) wins the battle, he wont be at the 2014 World Cup, that is if we qualify." Ezeugo was a journeyman during his days as a footballer, playing in five continents. He earned his first cap for Nigeria under German coach Manfred Hoener at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul, South Korea before he was picked by Dutchman Clemens Westerhof for the 1994 World Cup.
