VCs seek abolition of UTME

In response to the out-cry of some stakeholders, the Committee of Vice Chancellors, on Thursday, called for the abolition of the Universal Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) for admitting candidates into the nation's universities.Professor Is-haq Oloyede, who appeared before the Senate Committee on Education, said it was improper to use the same examinations to admit students into universities, polytechnics and colleges of education.Oloyede, who is the chairman of the committee and Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, recommended that the Joint Admission Matriculation Board (JAMB) be reverted to the old system, when Universities Matriculation Examinations (UME) was specifically for universities and other examinations for polytechnics and colleges of education, as it was done before 2009.He argued that the screening conducted by the universities sought to ascertain if the candidates were suitable for university education, adding that the syllabus of the universities was completely different from those of the polytechnics and colleges of education.He admitted that there were some abuses in the conduct of the Post-JAMB tests conducted by the universities, but added that those abuses were being addressed by the committee of vice chancellors.
