CDRP berates monarch for defying court order

Published by Punch on Tue, 08 Nov 2011

A non-governmental organisation, Committee for Democracy and Rights of the People, has condemned the deposed Ataoja of Osogbo, Mr. Jimoh Olanipekun, for failing to heed two separate court orders.Justices Yinka Aderibigbe and Oyejide Falola of Osogbo High Court, in two separate rulings had declared the Ataoja stool as vacant and Olanipekun unknown to law. Both justices ordered Olanipekun to stop parading himself as the Ataoja.Specifically, Aderibigbe faulted the process that produced Olanipekun while Falola said Olanipekun was an impostor, who showed disregard for the rule of law.Speaking with journalists in Osogbo on Monday, the National Coordinator of CDRP, Mr. Amitolu Shittu, said the continued stay of Olanipekun in the palace was a slap on the face of justice. He said, "The deposed monarch of Osogbo, Mr Jimoh Olanipekun, has shown utter disregard for rule of law. He has openly disregarded two court rulings, which stated that he was an illegal occupier of the palace."We charge stakeholders not to let this impunity go unpunished. We are going to employ all legal means to ensure that justice is done. Things cannot continue to go on like this."Shittu called on Governor Rauf Aregbesola to ensure that Olanipekun complied with the rulings of the court, adding that his (Olanipokuns) continued stay in the palace would send wrong signals."If this disregard for justice is not addressed and used as a deterrent, some other members of the society will embark on similar or more dastardly acts," a statement by CDRP said.
