NDE trains 34,000 youths in Enugu

The National Directorate of Employment has said that it has trained 34,308 unemployed persons in various vocational trades in Enugu State between 1987 and 2010.It also said that beneficiaries of its Resettlement Loan Scheme had established over 600 micro and small businesses.The NDE State Coordinator in Enugu State, Mr. Nnamdi Asomugha, disclosed this on Tuesday while briefing the Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Amaechi Okolo, on the directorates operations in the state.Asomugha said the directorate had initiated a concerted approach to address the problem of unemployment and, had in collaboration with the Udenu Local Government Council, trained 500 youths in the area.He said that the agency had resettled 200 of the trainees, including unemployed youths, commercial sex workers, people with special needs and others with tools and equipment to establish and run micro-business outfits in fashion design, hat and bead making and GSM handset repair, among others.He said, Two weeks ago, there was another partnership arrangement between the NDE and a faith-based organisation, Emeralds Professional Women Ministry, in Enugu, which resulted in the training and resettlement of 50 widows in trades like cosmetology, hair dressing, fashion design and other income generating activities.Asomugha said that as a further demonstration of its mission of empowering women, the directorate, through its Women Employment Branch, last year trained 280 women on events and interior decoration, dressmaking, and fondant and cake production, while four women cooperative societies received loan packages of N250,000 each.Asomugha stated that the NDE was conducting trainings in about 80 trades with 60 master trainers in Enugu State.He said, Presently, 500 unemployed youth trainees are undergoing vocational training at various centres throughout the state.
