ACN members kick against imposition in Ekiti

Published by Punch on Wed, 09 Nov 2011

Members of the Action Congress of Nigeria in Omuo, Ekiti East Local Government Area of Ekiti State on Tuesday stormed the secretariat of the party in Ado-Ekiti to protest against alleged imposition of a candidate in the forthcoming LGA election. The protesters, who alleged that some leaders of the ACN in the council were imposing Mr. Rotimi Ajidara on them, said the action could spell doom for the party in the January 21 poll.Led by an aspirant, Mr. Kayode Idiowo, the placard-carrying protesters warned the leadership of the party not to toy with the zoning arrangement in the council. They specifically accused a political appointee from the area of working to thwart the aspiration of Idiowo, who they said was the choice of the majority of the people of the council. The protesters also claimed that Ward 9 in Ekiti East Constituency I where Ajidara comes from, had already produced a chairman for the council. They argued that nobody was permitted to come out again from the ward until the rotation arrangement had been fulfilled.Idiowo, in an interview with journalists, said his aspiration had the endorsement of the people of the ward and the entire LGA , adding that any attempt to impose a candidate on people could have a negative effect on the ACN.He said, "I am a loyal party man. We want the party to recognise the choice of the community. The party exists within the community and the choice of the people must be recognised by the party."I dont want to talk about the legal implication of the imposition of a candidate but we all know the case of Rotimi Amaechi and Celestine Omehia of Rivers State. I believe that Governor Kayode Fayemi is not behind the imposition as the commissioner claimed at a meeting. Some persons who want to put their puppet in office are dropping the name of the governor. That is why we have come here to make our feelings known."When contacted, the Chairman of the ACN, Chief Jide Awe, said the party was already attending to the protest.
