Awujale decries poor quality of education 'As Glo donates classrooms to Ijebu-Ode

Published by Tribune on Thu, 10 Nov 2011

The Awujale ofIjebuland, ObaSikiru Kayode Adetona, has decried the poor quality of education in Nigeria, describing it as 'a situation where half-educated students are mass produced yearly.'He made these remarks at the turning of the sod for the building of a block of classrooms at Muslim College, Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, as a corporate social responsibility project to be undertaken by telecoms giant, Globacom, which has sponsored the Ojude Oba festival for the seventh year running. The paramount ruler of the Ijebu people said this was all the more disappointing, because most secondary school leavers could neither speak nor write in English successfully.'What you find is that most secondary school students who are certificated, having completed a six-year period of study and having sat for examinations to so qualify, cannot, as a matter of fact, engage you in a few sentences of English without you wondering if they ever went near the gate of a school, not to talk of qualifying for higher studies,' he said.He challenged the government to pay more attention to the provision of quality education for students, towards giving them a more assured future.'I am not talking of the construction of classrooms only. Such classrooms must be well-equipped with teaching and learning aids, the laboratories must have needed implements to ascertain the delivery of sound and quality education to the future leaders of this nation, whose future we should not toy with, because they will have to compete with the world to deliver viable leadership in future,' the traiditional ruler said.Oba Adetona commended the chairman of Globacom, Dr Mike Adenuga, for his concern for the future generation of Nigerians, by engaging his resources to the provision of infrastructure at the college, while urging other well-meaning Nigerians to stand and be counted in such laudable ventures.Globacom's Head of Glo 1 Enterprise Solution, who represented Dr Adenuga on the occasion, Mr Folu Aderibigbe, said the donation of the block of classrooms was borne out of the company's resolve to take on civic and social projects that would have direct and significant impact on the lives of youths in various communities across the country.
