Northern group, USAID back Bauchi NGOs with N57m

THE Nigerian Northern Education Initiative (NEI) funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has disbursed N56.5 million to eight non- governmental organisations (NGOs) in Bauchi State run their non-formal learning centres.NEI Chief of Party, Dr. Christopher Ashford, who disbursed the funds yesterday in Fariah Suits, Bauchi, said the fund came from taxes paid by Americans for the development of their country but extended to the groups to enhance learning in the state.She urged the beneficiaries to use the money judiciously to meet set targets.The NGOs, which benefited from the fund, were Rahama Women Development, Centre for Women and Youth Development Initiative, Young Men Christian Fellowship Association, Ummah Support Initiative, Reproductive Health Initiative and Adolescent Health Education, Development Pioneer Reproductive and Youth Association Misau, and the Action Education Initiative and Malnutrition.She said over 1,600 orphans and vulnerable children in Bauchi have benefited from NEI-USAID programme, stressing that children need all the financial and material support to stay in school.In her remarks on behalf of the beneficiaries, Mrs. Mary Jamil of Rahama of the Women Development Centre, said the NGOs were selected based on their capacity to implement such projects.
