Alaro bridge has disconnected us from other parts of Ibadan - Residents

Published by Tribune on Fri, 11 Nov 2011

RESIDENTS of Alarocommunity, nearOloguneru and Eleyele communities, on the outskirts of Ibadan, Oyo State with a population of over 40,000 have cried out over what they described as their inability to gain access to other neighbouring communities. The residents of Alaro community, in their complaint to Community News, explained that the only bridge linking the community with other areas of Ibadan was in a terrible state.According to the people of the area, Alaro bridge has become a death trap because nobody living in the area is bold enough to cross the bridge to the other side. The explanation given to Community News by Mrs. Eunice Aderonke Siwoku, was that the Alaro bridge had remained damaged since August 26, 2011 flood disaster that ravaged many areas in Ibadan metropolis, which also affected Eleyele, Ologuneru and Alaro communities, thus making it difficult for both pedestrians and motorists to use.In her words, 'it is now a serious pain for Alaro community dwellers to usethe Alaro bridge. After August 26, 2011 flood disaster, things changed completely for the residents of the community and every effort to get the bridge repaired received no positive response from the appropriate authorities.'Another resident of Alaro community who is also a retiree, Elder Solomon Adedotun, told Community News that it was high time the state government found solution to the problem, adding that it seemed the authority of the local government council concerned does not have the financial strength and capacity to reconstruct the popular bridge.Mr Segun Adeagbo, a resident of Eleyele community, also buttressed the explanations of residents of Alaro community, stressing that the state government should come to the aid of the people in the community. For a banker, Mr. Niyi Ogunwale, who said he came to the area seven months ago, Alaro community need urgent intervention of the state government on the bridge.
